Homoeopathy for Colds

July/August 1993

With the current epidemic of colds and flu, more and more people are turning to homoeopathic and herbal remedies to help with prevention, to limit the illness, and to alleviate the symptoms.

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine that improves the person's health by giving remedies that are tailor-made for the person. It can be used for the whole range of mental and physical conditions in both children and adults. Homoeopathic remedies are chosen according to the overall pattern of symptoms, and the general features of the patient. Each dose is a subtle correction to the body, and the improvement comes from the body's ability to respond after the correction.

For full constitutional treatment, when high potency remedies may be given, the match between the patient and the remedy needs to be quite precise, but in a first aid situation, where lower potencies are used the choice of remedy can usually be made from just a small number that have proved their effectiveness in this situation.

One very useful remedy for colds and flu is AGE 30c. This is a combination of three first aid remedies (Arsenicum Iodatum, Gelsemium and Eupatorium Perfoliatum). 30c refers to the potency of the remedy it is a low potency that is most commonly used in a first aid situation.

AGE 30c can be used for cold and flu prevention, in the dose of 4 drops of the liquid form, or 2 ablets sucked, once a fortnight throughout the winter. The dosage is the same for children and adults. It can also be used for the treatment of colds and flu, and covers the early onset of a cold, to fully developed influenza, and the lingering final stages. The dose in this situation is 4 drops onto the tongue, or 2 tablets sucked, three times a day.

Aconite 30c is the treatment of choice in the early stages of a cold, and is often used to help prevent the progression of the illness. It is normally only used in the first 12 to 24 hours, and then other remedies are used at a later stage, if required.

Herbs also have an outstanding usefulness for colds and flu. The Homoeobotanical system was developed in Auckland, and comprises herbal blends which are then made into a low homoeopathic potency. Because of their herbal properties, they do not need to be as carefully matched to the individual as homoeopathic remedies do, and because of their homoeopathic properties they are more potent than herbs usually are, and only need to be taken in a dose of drops, rather than teaspoons.

Homoeobotanical C, the colds and Influenza Tonic, is used for the common cold, influenza and nasal mucus. The components are Bloodroot, Boneset, Coltsfoot, Elderflower, Fenugreek, Golden Rod, Golden Seal, Horehound, Peppermint and Thyme. The dose for children is 1 to 2 drops 3-6 times daily, and for adults 3 drops, 3 times daily.

If conventional medicine or antibiotics are required, they can still be given, but there is a wealth of benefit to be gained from using Homoeopathic remedies and herbs in a first aid setting, for illness such as colds and flu.
